Handel & Haydn Masterworks Concert

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society presents its opening fall masterworks program Sunday, October 28, 2018, 3:00 PM in UNLV’s Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. The program will feature the Dettingen Te Deum by G. F. Handel, and Joseph Haydn’s Missa Cellensis in C (Mariazeller-Mass). Guest soloists include soprano, Suzanne Russell; contralto, Melissa Sorrentino; tenor, Robert Peterson; and bass baritone, Thomas Hydes.

The Dettingen Te Deum, one of Handel’s most brilliant works, is noted for its expression of majesty and reverence. Sung in English, strains of Handel’s Messiah may even be heard in this famous piece celebrating England’s “Dettingen Victory!”  Missa Cellensis in C (Mariazeller-Mass), noted for its generous orchestration, is Haydn’s ninth mass and considered the precursor to the composer’s late Masses.

This concert is the first of two masterwork concerts of Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society’s 56th season and marks Dr. Peterson’s 51st year as Music Director of SNMAS, Nevada’s distinguished Choral Society and longest running arts organization!  This program is sponsored by John E. Andrea Bocelli in Concert

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society will provide the choral accompaniment for Andrea Bocelli’s 2018 annual Christmas engagement on Saturday evening, December 1, 2018 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. Members of the 65-voice Musical Arts Chorus are thrilled to have been invited to perform with Andrea Bocelli for the 9th time during his annual U.S. tour.

Christmas Concert–Musical Arts Singers

Dr. Rando-Grillot Recital Hall Beam Music Center

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society celebrates the season with a performance of the Alfred Burt Carols and I’ll Always Love Christmas, a choral medley of bright holiday songs by Ed Lojeski. The Christmas concert, features popular and traditional holiday favorites performed by the Musical Arts Singers, Chorus, and guest soloists under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Peterson.

The program is at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16, in the Dr. Rando-Grillot Recital Hall in Beam Music Center at UNLV. Pianist Tyrone Bowers and vocalists Darla Brighton, Rose Ringer, Melissa Sorrentino, and Marisu Romualdez-Abellar, are among featured guest soloists. Solo highlights include “O Holy Night” and “Merry Christmas Darling.”

“A Hymn to the Virgin” by Benjamin Britten; “Benedicamus Domino” by Peter Warlock, a lively “Three Wise Men” from Anders Ohrwall’s The Three Kings; the spirited “Carol of the Bells” are featured choral pieces.

Musical Arts Singers in Concert

The Musical Arts Singers will perform Choral Medleys highlighting music of Richard Rodgers, George and Ira Gershwin, Disney favorites, and sentimental 40’s music.

The program under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Peterson features music from “State Fair” and “Carousel” by Richard Rodgers, and highlights songs by George and Ira Gershwin in Who Could Ask for Anything More?

The performance includes entertaining songs by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, with music from award-winning animated movies “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Aladdin,” in Disney Dazzle arranged by Mac Huff. The Musical Arts Singers will also take our audience down memory lane with A Sentimental Journey, a montage of popular music from the 40’s.

Bach & Vivaldi Masterworks Concert

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society’s 56th Season spring Masterwork Concert performed by the Musical Arts Chorus, Orchestra, and Guest soloists, will be held at Green Valley Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m. The program features J. S. Bach’s Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, calls the voice to us), Cantata 140., and Vivaldi’s Gloria RV 589. Guest soloists include soprano, Suzanne Russell; contralto, Valeria Sokolova; tenor, Robert Peterson; and bass-baritone, Thomas Hydes.

Cantata 140, known widely as “Sleepers Awake” is one of the world’s outstanding masterworks and one of Bach’s most mature and admired sacred cantatas. It is based on the hymn “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” (1599) by Philipp Nicolai. The Gloria is one of Vivaldi’s familiar and popular works. The piece’s delightful sunny nature, with its distinctive melodies and rhythms, is characteristic of his music.

This concert is the second of two masterwork concerts of Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society’s 56th season and marks Dr. Peterson’s 51st year as Music Director of SNMAS, Nevada’s distinguished Choral Society and longest running arts organization! The Musical Arts Chorus and Guest Soloists will perform music by Cole Porter and Lerner & Loewe in its annual “Pops” concert at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 19, in Dr. Rando-Grillot Recital Hall Beam Music Center at UNLV. Pianist Tyrone Bowers and vocalists John A. Smith, bass-baritone; Donna Olufsen, soprano; Marisu Romualdez-Abellar, contralto, and Melissa Sorrentino, contralto are among the featured soloists.

The program under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Peterson will feature the Musical Arts Chorus and guest soloists in music by Cole Porter, one of the giants of the American musical theatre and the composer of 23 Broadway musicals; and Lerner & Loewe, writers of some of the most successful musical shows on Broadway and in motion-picture history.

Featured choral medleys include “Classic Cole Porter” with over 30 Porter songs and “Broadway Legends: Lerner & Lowe,” with music from “Camelot,” “My Fair Lady,” and “Paint Your Wagon.” Highlights will include enchanting Porter songs “In the Still of the Night, “Begin the Beguine,” and “Just One of Those Things; and lively Lerner and Loewe melodies “I Could Have Danced all Night,” “Camelot,” and “Get Me to the Church on Time”

This is the closing concert of Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society’s 56thseason and marks Dr. Peterson’s 51st Anniversary as Music Director of SNMAS.
